America's Unique Gated City:

Mirtillo, New Jersey, is a place of profound historical significance and unique distinction as the United States' sole Gated City. Situated between Trenton, New Jersey, and Levittown, Pennsylvania, Mirtillo's journey began as an unassuming tract of land with a remarkable destiny.

During the tumult of the Civil War, Dr. E.F. Taylor, a visionary and compassionate figure, oversaw the construction of a recovery hospital on Mirtillo's soil. This sanctuary offered solace to both Union soldiers and Confederate prisoners, embodying the spirit of empathy and humanity amidst the chaos of conflict.

From these humble beginnings, Mirtillo burgeoned into a thriving hamlet, its landscape adorned with lush farmlands and bustling mills, with cranberries flourishing as its primary crop, a testament to its agricultural heritage.

In 1866, Mirtillo earned official recognition as a town and was absorbed into Mercer County following a protracted dispute with Pennsylvania. This marked a pivotal moment in Mirtillo's journey, solidifying its identity within the fabric of America.

Today, Mirtillo boasts the prestigious Durand Grant University campus, renowned for its groundbreaking medical and technology research programs. The city also houses notable science-focused attractions, including the Museum of Natural History and the original location of Wilmut Laboratories, embodying a commitment to intellectual exploration and innovation.

Mirtillo's commitment to infrastructure development is evident through the inauguration of its subway system in July 1901, with the Bruce Avenue Station serving as a vital transportation hub.

Education has always been a cornerstone of Mirtillo's ethos, with the construction of a courthouse and jail in Trenton around 1870 and the establishment of its first school in 1871, paving the way for future generations of learners.

But Mirtillo is more than just a city—it's a community bound by shared values and a profound sense of duty. Its status as a Gated City comes with stringent regulations, including state and federal sanctions such as a no-fly zone and a year-round prohibition on fireworks. Firearms are restricted to emergency services, reflecting a commitment to safety and security.

Requirements for residency in Mirtillo are carefully curated, ranging from military service affiliation to medical necessity, ensuring a cohesive and supportive community for its residents. Notable past and present residents, including NASA astrophysicist Patricia Rigby and retired four-star General Joseph Rallis, exemplify the city's diverse and esteemed populace.

While Mirtillo's rules may appear stringent to some, each ordinance is meticulously crafted to cater to the needs of its residents, particularly those who have served their country. In recognition of their sacrifice, Mirtillo offers an annual $3,000 tax incentive for active military personnel or veterans who choose to make the city their home.

Mirtillo stands as a testament to resilience, unity, and service—a beacon of honor and support for those who have dedicated their lives to the greater good. In its streets, one finds not just a city, but a home—a sanctuary where duty, community, and patriotism intertwine to create a truly unique and cherished enclave.
